ICP Orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary and the 75th birthday of drummer/ICP founder Han Bennink

Instant Composers Pool celebrates its 50th anniversary with a weekend full of concerts at the Bimhuis, welcoming many special guests. Drummer Han Bennink, a leading figure of the improvisational group since its foundation, will celebrate his 75th birthday along with the anniversary. As always, an important share of the repertory will consist of the compositions of former ICP pianist Misha Mengelberg, who passed away on March 3, 2017.
The ICP Orchestra, which was founded by Mengelberg and Bennink, is a unique cross between a big band and a chamber orchestra in which brass and string players challenge each other. The orchestra connects American swing to European music and singular improvisations. ‘They are brilliant soloists, scholars and physical comedians, critics and joy-spreaders’ (New York Times). Among the many guests this weekend are singers, dancers, a pop/funk heroine, a noise/rock guitarist and many others. Also, all ages can join in and sing along on the Zing Zang Mengelberg afternoon with timeless Mengelberg songs.

The special exhibition, from April 12 onwards at the Bimhuis café, includes posters, LP covers, sheet music by Misha Mengelberg and other ICP memorabilia from the past 50 years. The exhibition is a collaboration with the Dutch Jazz Archive.
