Aldrig i Livet (a Danish and Swedish idiom used to strongly refuse something or express that an event is completely impossible) is a Danish-Swedish free-improv supergroup featuring one of the most uncompromising alto sax players in Danish jazz since the late 1960s, Jesper Zeuthen, Swedish experimental guitarist Martin Nilsson, and Danish drummers-percussionists with a highly personal aesthetics – Thomas Præstegaard, a frequent collaborator of Zeuthen, and Michala Østergaard-Nielsen, who is also a composer with a distinctive voice.
The quartet came together during 2024 following a recording session with other Danish musicians and the American master drummer Ra Kalam Bob Moses in the summer of 2023. Its debut album, Det Osagda Mumlar i Bäcken (literally: The unsaid murmurs in the stream, a metaphor for the subconscious), was recorded in Malmö and Copenhagen in 2024 and 2025.
Zeuthen sets the album’s lyrical, contemplative, and deep listening spirit with his soulful, singing alto sax voice, and sketches the skeletal melodic lines of the instant textures. Nilsson’s effects-laden, resonant, and atmospheric electric guitar intensifies the melodic lines of introspective, intimate melodies with economic touches. Præstegaard and Østergaard-Nielsen beautifully color Zeuthen’s poetic musings with multifaceted layers of hypnotic and lush pulses of drums, percussion, vibraphone, and vibraphonette. The quartet’s collective, egalitarian, and open dynamics are always at the service of the music and always open to the unknown, suggesting masterfully how the art of the moment is being created.
Det Osagda Mumlar i Bäcken is structured as a collective, spiritual seven-part suite that evolves organically and manifests its powerful, often mysterious, but always inspiring voice. It acts like a perfect antidote to the fast urban life focused on consumerism and endless addiction to the scroll of blank screens.
