Percolation (from the Latin percolare, to filter or trickle through) is the third experimental, solo piano album by Norwegian pianist-composer Christian Wallumrød, following Pianokammer (Hubro, 2014), and Speaksome (Hubro, 2021). Wallumrød is known for his defining ECM albums with the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, the free improvising, and ensemble Dans les arbre, his electronic duo Brutter, formed with his drummer-brother Fredrik, and various commissions, from the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to contemporary choirs. The ten pieces were recorded between July 2023 and August 2024 at Nordic Black Theatre, asamisimasa’s studio, and Seleverksted, and all highlight Wallumrød’s singular, poetic sonic vision.
Wallumrød’s governing aesthetic is of less-is-more, but he makes wonders with such a modest and subtle approach, where silence is as important as the sounds, and often is matched with playful yet thoughtful sensuous quietude. With a few elements or elusive ideas, he paints insightful and intriguing sonic images, often gravitating into a loose, song format, but at times experimenting with the piano’s sonic palette, deliberately employing false steps and clumsy fumbles like an amateur pianist. He insists on translating his ideas without falling prey to facile technique, with a fresh, genre-defying spirit.
Percolation encompasses Wallumrød’s rich, uncategorizable vision. Playful, captivating pieces like «Ny gitar» stress Wallumrød’s gift to articulate immediate, uplifting, singable melodic themes, but the following «Cigarettes after gitar» suggests a completely different side of Wallumrød, austere and minimalist, corresponding with the long decays of Morton Feldman. «You didn’t» explores the dramatic, resonant qualities of the piano strings, with a twangy, almost country blues-like vibe, spiced with echoes of Nordic church music. «Higher than your gluteus» begins with an acidic synth beat but soon locks into a New Orleans-like rolling pulse. «Deer Naylla» enjoys an openly emotional, immediately hummable melody, just like the iconic songs of Neil Young, while the last lyrical piece, «The sing», sounds like a deep reflection on this sonic journey, capturing the essence of the Wallumrød musical identity.

Klaviaturspilleren Christian Wallumrød er nok en af Norges mest kendte jazzmusikere, internationalt set. Med næsten 2 håndfulde udgivelser på ECM, og en del plader på mere lokale selskaber som Hubro og NorCD, hvorunder tælles 4 med kvartteten Close Erase, har han sat sit spor. I feltet finder man både bestillingsarbejde fra Trondheim Jazz Ochestra, ensemblespil og soloudgivelser. Og netop det sidste er den nye plade fra Sofa.
Wallumrød hører ikke til de klaverspillere som er direkte og ekstroverte. Tværtimod mestrer han pausen og stilheden. Pladens titel er Percolation hvilket på dansk kan betyde i hvert fald to ting, som måske hænger sammen, men også kan forstås hver for sig. Filtrering eller sivning. En bevægelse gennem lag oppefra og ned. Hørt i sin helhed genkendes det billede i Wallmrøds musik. Fra de første fire kompositioner hvor lydbilledet er som dybe meditative figurer. I starten drypvis minimalistisk, hvorefter det lysner i Ny gitar, som sagtens kunne være toner af en akustisk guitar, og i Cigarettes after gitar, en smøg efter sex? Eller bare stof til eftertanke. Fra You didn’t udvides sproget med flere andre instrumenter. Er vi ved at nå bunden af filtrerings/sivningsprocessen? Og tonerne lagrer sig i et bredere spektrum. Higher than your gluteus, røvbaldernes muskler, med en rudimentær ostinato, som med lidt god vilje kan høres som hjerteslag. Melodiernes klarhed bliver tydeligere her ved vejs ende. Jeg tror sågar at Dear Naylia er en kærlighedshymne. Wallumsrøds sparsomlighed med toner bør ikke afskrække nogen fra denne musik, som er virkelig velovervejet
