HYPER ELASTIC JINX

«We Vote Force Majeure»
BAREFOOT, BFREC091CD

Hyper Elastic Jinx is the free improvising, working power quartet of Danish alto sax player Signe Emmeluth (the leader of Emmeluth’s Amoeba), fellow Danish tenor sax player Nana Pi (of Nezelhorns, Tactical Maybe), Japanese, Berlin-based guitarist Keisuke Matsuno, and Korean, Germany-based drummer Halym Kim (Nana Pi’s partner who hosts her in his Bijul band). We Vote Force Majeure is the quartet’s debut album. It was recorded at the Black Tornado Studio in Copenhagen in July 2025 after the quartet’s tour in Germany and a performance at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.

We Vote Force Majeure already establishes Hyper Elastic Jinx’ uncompromising and non-hierarchical DNA – hyper energetic, intense, risk-taking, and multidirectional. The quartet draws on the versatile, multicultural experiences of Emmeluth, Nana Pi, Matsuno, and Kim in free jazz, avant-rock, experimental, and contemporary music, transforming these diverse experiences into an urgent, expressive political message. «The world and the structures we are living in are not socially, economically, ecologically or politically sustainable and benefit only a minority of people». Hyper Elastic Jinx seeks an irresistible Force Majeure that people can’t ignore – a force that focuses on social values, cultural exchange, and ecological sustainability.

The album sets each of its nine pieces to maximum power, pushing them all to explore raw collisions, tangling frequencies, overlapping textures, open tonalities, rhythmic structures, and complex emotions, on their own and collectively, and with «Chainsaw Mentality», as one of the pieces is titled. Emmeluth and Nana Pi have developed an almost telepathic interplay, working as a two-headed, fiery sonic entity with an impressive array of extended breathing techniques. Meanwhile, Matsuno and Kim never settle on a rhythmic pattern, always intensifying the restless tension with thorny, distorted guitar lines and fragmented, percussive sounds. The longest pieces, «The Consequences Of Mr. Albert Irony» and «Let It Happen At Our Peril», best capture Hyper Elastic Jinx’ restless and irresistible Force Majeure.
