Joseph Branciforte is an American experimental electronics player, composer, recording engineer, producer, and sound artist who runs the New York-based greyfade label, a platform for artists exploring process-based composition, alternative tuning systems, and digitally mediated forms of improvisation. His work explores the intersection of structured systems and emergent phenomena through custom-built technology. He works across performance, composition, and installation in both acoustic and electronic mediums, and is known for his collaborations with Taylor Deupree, Theo Bleckmann, and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Jozef Dumoulin is a Belgian, Paris-based genre-defying pianist and keyboard player, recognized for his role in redefining the vintage Fender Rhodes as a 21st-century instrument, forging a highly personal musical language through extensive electronic manipulation. He was the first musician to present a full solo program featuring the Fender Rhodes. He is known for his solo projects and his collaborations with Ellery Eskelin, Tony Malaby, and Mark Turner.
Branciforte and Dumoulin’s debut duo album, ITERAE. Is an instantly composed yet carefully layered and looped, eight-movement suite of post-minimalist, post-ambient, post-drone, post-noise, and post-glitch sounds. The nameless movements center around the complementary dialogue of two separate Fender Rhodes electric pianos, with Branciforte and Dumoulin applying their own sets of live processing and electronic effects. Branciforte added a custom-made, live editing software, designed to process both musicians’ sonic outputs in real time. This software allowed him to capture and reconfigure musical material on the fly, creating cascading, lattice-like structures from small details within the unfolding improvisation.
Branciforte and Dumoulin sound as an inseparable, futurist sonic entity, flirting with fleeting melodic themes, distortion, arrhythmic pulses, fragmented noises, and post-glitch music, while reflecting ideas from contemporary music, space-rock, electronic, and ambient music. It is impossible to tell who is doing what or how they are producing the evocative, mysterious, and cinematic textures. ITERAE hovers through futurist, psychedelic atmospheres and liquid architectures, and between form and abstraction, precision and dream-like visions, with a deep immersive impact.
ITERAE is issued as a bespoke multi-disc edition designed by Branciforte, extending the music’s own structural logic into physical form.
