KJETIL HUSEBØ

«Live at Nasjonal Jazzscene»
OPTICAL SUBSTANCE PRODUCTIONS, OSP008

«Live at Nasjonal Jazzscene» is a live realization of Norwegian pianist-electronics musician-composer Kjetil Husebø’s project Piano Transformed. The recording is from a solo concert at Nasjonal Jazzscene in Oslo and was taken during the Tape to Zero festival in April 2016, Oslo.

Husebø’s Piano Transformed project, documented before on «Piano Transformed» (Optical Substance, 2017) (you can read the review HERE), attempted to suggest a musical unification of the grand piano and live sampling and live electronics. Husebø succeeded to transform the piano into a source of sounds – acoustic, sampled, manipulated, and processed into carefully layered textures, and simultaneously expanded its sonic range and offered a unique, sometimes intimate, and sometimes provocative interactions between the piano and the live sampling and electronics.

This live recording consists of four different parts, each one offers a distinct interaction or exploration of the relationship between Husebø the pianist, and the acoustic piano and Husebø the electronics wizard, and his array of software and electronics devices. In a way, this recording suggests four different insights into the inner dialog of any creative artist, relating to his art as a work-in-progress and still commenting on it, even when it is presented to the public.

This recording also highlights the rich sonic horizons of Husebø. The music ranges from the experimental, fragmented ambiance of the first part, through the melodic but melancholic Nordic jazz of the second part that corresponds best with its subtle and haunting electronic overtones, and to the percussive patterns of the acoustic piano, competing with its manipulated, electronic abstractions on the third part, all played as one long suite. The fourth part is more reserved with its employment of live sampling and live electronics, letting these sounds embrace gently the minimalist, somber theme, as an extension of the grand piano resonant qualities.

The piano has transformed into a compelling and quite vivid sonic entity.

One Response to “KJETIL HUSEBØ”
