LEO GENOVESE

«Solo Brooklyn»
577 RECORDS

Leo Genovese is an Argentine, Brooklyn-based, prolific pianist and composer who studied classical and contemporary music before switching to jazz and studying at the Berklee College of Music with Danilo Perez, Joanne Brackeen, and Frank Carlberg, among others. He has performed with Esperanza Spalding, Wayne Shorter, and Jack DeJohnette.

Solo Brooklyn is Genovese’s sophomore solo piano album, following Forward (577, 2024). Both albums were recorded live at the New York Forward Festival in Brooklyn, where he is one of the organizers, but Solo Brooklyn in January 2025. The album offers six extended, spontaneously improvised pieces.

The album reflects Genovese’s restless need and commitment with a highly personal and commanding voice, sometimes using raw and cryptic language. It is aptly titled «Resonancias Desobedientes» (Disobedient Resonances), which is also the title of the third piece. The album’s atmosphere is contemplative and reserved—almost abstract and cosmic, and at times even romantic—blurring the distinction between modern jazz and free improvised music while capturing Genovese’s extensive experience and boundless creativity.

Genovese radiates beautifully not only his personal experiences, such as a «Trotamundos» (Globetrotter, as another piece is titled), but his captivating musical vision of free music as a force for change in a world troubled by wars, tyrannical leaders, and economic inequalities.
