Trio Inflorescence is an American, Philadelphia-based trio that acts in a generative way similar to how the fractals of plant structures are created, reaching for the sky and basking in the sun. An inflorescence is a cluster or group of flowers arranged on a specific stem or a complex system of branches. It functions as an evolutionary adaptation to enhance reproduction by grouping multiple blooms to attract pollinators more effectively.

The chamber Trio Inflorescence features trombonist Dan Blacksberg, known for his work with klezmer music, radical Jewish culture, as well as with Anthony Braxton and Joe Morris, violinist Carlos Santiago, and bassoonist and pianist Sonali Singh. The trio recorded its debut album live at the spiritual home of the American Revolution, the historic Christ Church in Philadelphia, known for its reverberant acoustics, in December 2025. The album’s title, Exocytosis, refers to a form of active, bulk transport where a cell moves large molecules or waste products out of the cell.

This trio explores the stimulating tension between composition and spontaneous improvisation, in a process that the trio calls a «ritual, where each statement builds and terraforms the other until you are standing on the edge of a newly created world». You can think about this trio’s dynamics as similar to plant life cycles, an experiment in biosonification where improvising growth and withering through time adapts to the natural, unnatural, and imaginary implications of sonic moments.

This trio attempts to play and break down its musicians’ musical preconceptions, with patient, deep listening exploration and experimenting with unpredictable harmonies, surprising noises, spectralist materials, and the energy of a live performance, while letting its music blossom and sing with its own inner logic. The last, 17-minute title piece by Singh demonstrates how beautifully this unique trio can blossom.
