Mandagsklubben i marts

Our distinguished artist in residence in march is none other than the incredible Martin Ullitsdahl.

Martin Ullitsdahl is Multi-instrumentalist and music-conceptualist.  Member of the danish composers union since the age of 9.  Throughout his young adulthood, he toured and recorded with many different bands, besides composing for theatre and film.
His first solo-album “Prins Nitram – Bomty Bomty” was released in 2008, starring Thomas Blachman, Al Mobbs, Thøger Tetens, Frederik Thaae, Mads Hyhne, Hans Find Møller and other great musicians. The album received top-reviews, as did his many solo-performances in China, Brazil, Australia, Europe and Scandinavia. The shows were a humoristic meta-ironic stage-experiment consisting original gimmicks and top-level musicianship, somewhere between Tony Clifton and Frank Zappa.
Ullitsdahl’s musical studies points in two main directions: spontaneous songwriting (improvisation) and conceptual songwriting. Some results of these experiments has resulted in bands like «1000LAX», “The Magnetic Eagle” and «Eggs Laid By Tigers”, and other interdisciplinary works such as the fitness-ballet «Bodyblær» (CPH Royal Theatre, 2013), and DR P1’s radio-series «Nye Toner På Kroen» (inventing a new songwriting-and-radio-concept, which was later adopted in a more popular scale in shows like «sangskriver»).
It is hard to put a label on Ullitsdahl’s music, since there are no genre-borders in his universe. But once you know, you will recognize any ullitsdahl bassline, drumbeat , guitar-riff or vocal, by the intensity and soul. From the leading vocals in Django Bates Sgt Peppers-tribute, to the tethering baselines on the newest Rocqawali-album, Ullitsdahl always plays a song like it was his own.
He is a musical intermediator, whose work is best experienced when present.

Petter Rylen Trio record release: After The Meltdown

Petter Rylen – piano
Casper Nyvang Rask- bass
Kresten Osgood – drums

This is the greatest trio in the world that plays one gig every three years. and now they have released an album that was recorded quite a long time ago. why are they moving so slow? we are actually not sure..maybe one of them has a hobby that takes up a lot of time..regardless..this trio is infact scaring the living daylights out of pretty much every other piano trio in the world – or at least they would-.-if they played— as the CD (yes, CD, not vinyl) will also testify…this is a great trio. a kind of post post upon upon ahmad jamal trio…

kl 20:00
Jungle Money

Jan Kaspersen – keys
Peter Friis Nielsen – el bas
Claus Bøje – drums

One of the heaviest trios in town is back! reversing the title of the Ellington/Roach/Mingus masterpiece and turning it electric. This is the 3rd time they play the club and we can’t wait to have them back. as most monday club regulars know..the tandem of Bøje and Friis is one of the true gems of Copenhagen, totally comparable with The Little Mermaid and Christiania. Utterly Danish and utterly great. The same can be said about master pianist and composer Jan Kaspersen who has been shaking it up for over 50 years! Mødepligt ellers får du et minus i kontaktbogen.

kl 21:00
Wax Joe

Martin Ullits Dahl – guitar, bass, vox, drums
Kresten Osgood – drums, keys, vox

He started out as the pride of Nibe, but has long since then made us all proud. The duo with Kresten Osgood is kinetic on a Dolphin level. This magic duo saw the light of day in a little swedish town called «Wax Joe». The music is sticky, has a strong hold, and it is very hard to wash out of your hair.

They have mostly been playing abroad or in the legendary trio with Snöleoparden named «Du Ka Svøm» this will be something else!

The duo createmultiform improvisation combining suspended moments with noisy passages. They take great care of timber in a constant state of flux made of moods and contrastswhich are in turn part of different narratives. for this show they are joined by the great saxophonist Maria Dybbroe

Lucie Szabovà – vcl
Calum Builder – sax
Mark Ibsgaard Gregersen – db

Yes! Its the Monday Band at 7pm each monday until the end of time. The Monday Band was formed to focus on playing improvised music in a large ensemble and draws its members from the large vibrant group of improvisers in town and passing through. The idea is to have a international band with a open constellation which connects the improvising scene in Copenhagen and performs every week. The band will play minimal compositions, improvising concepts and graphic scores composed and arranged by the members of the band. the band will have a flexible lineup each week but with a core group of artists consistently there.  Copenhagen has long needed a place where a steady workshop band could experiment with improvising in a large ensemble and the MondayClub is the place to do it so welcome to THE MONDAY BAND

kl 20:00

Erik Kimestad – trumpet
Matthias Petri – bass
Kresten Osgood – drums

This is the 3rd time this quartet of likeminded improvisors play at the club. they have been getting into a very detailed kind of improvising together, the presence of søren nørbo being the katalyst for this type of playing. be there when they open up our minds at 9pm the 9th, or as the great italian philosopher Gianni Diovianianinni says: «….what?!?»

This band started out as friends, then later became a punk-band, transforming into a jazzband (still in progress). 1000LAX takes dance trance music to its original meaning – which is not the 90’s tecno-style, but a mix of strategies to transport the audience into «the zone». Personel: Peter Binau Høj: bass+synth, Gustav Niepoort: guitar, Johan Knattrup Jensen: vocal, Hans Find Møller: bass+synth, Martin Ullitsdahl: drums+saxophone.

kl 21:00
Martin Ullitsdahl solo – Prins Nitram

Martin Ullitsdahl: guitar, drums and vocals.

Ullitsdahl solo: The old oneman band «Prins Nitram» comes alive after 10 years. If you weren’t lucky enough to expereince his royal madness back in the mid 00’s, it may sound like a gimmick, but the real experience is an out-off-this-world musical ceremony of «selves coming together».
Even though, at the time not being concious of his great master, the late Jereome Cooper’s work, the inspiration is obvious.

kl 22:00
LA BOMBA

Erik Kimestad : trumpet
Ned Ferm : ten sax

The Westgaard/Mellem Implosion

Martin Mellem: Drums
Hein Westgaard: Guitar

This will be a rare meeting between two up and coming improvisers from the Copenhagen and Trondheim scene. Get ready for a clash of steel, skin, wood, electroacoustic amplification and vibrating steel strings in different combinations like you have never heard before! With Mellem´s unique Torstein-Lofthus-meets-Randy-Peterson-style and Hein Westgaards aestethics in the vein of Derek-Bailey-Meets-Bjørn-Klakegg, you can be sure of a once in a lifetime experience. The music can best be summed up with the Creed´s maxim: «Nothing Is True. Everything Is Permitted.» I can tell you that much.

Rømer has been consistantly great since the late 70s and was a frequent collaborator with John Tchicai. Per Aage Brandt recorded with Albert Ayler in the 60s and has been a creative force on the piano since then. He is also one of the most acute minds of his generation.
