Modern Medicine documents the collaboration of Mexico City’s psychedelic jazz-rock powerhouse A Love Electric – led by guitarist-singer-songwriter Todd Clouser (known for collaborations with luminaries like John Medeski and Cyro Baptista), double bass player Aarón Cruz, and drummer Jorge Servin, with Austrian young soprano sax player Lisa Hofmaninger (of the alternative quartet chuffDRONE). The album was recorded live at the intimate space of Pedro y El Lobo in Mexico City in August 2025, during a short tour of this ad-hoc quartet, after they had already performed together in Austria.
Modern Medicine is a genre-transcending, psychedelic, and spiritual sonic journey, blending A Love Electric’s gritty, bluesy-soulful grooves with Hofmaninger’s commanding sax improvisations. The album explores themes of renewal and resilience, including the late, sober realization that «God is a lady», through Clouser’s poetic, Beat-tinged spoken word and soulful singing. The album incorporates elements of modern and free jazz with seductive Latin grooves and is equipped with raw psychedelic energy. Hofmaninger feels at home with A Love Electric and adds a moving, lyrical touch and an experimental edge to the improvised pieces.
A Love Electric and Hofmaninger describe the album as offering a «sonic remedy for the modern era». And, indeed, the open-minded, spontaneous, and relaxed but fearless approach of Modern Medicine makes it a perfect, mind-bending, and healing antidote to the screen-addicted, short attention span zeitgeist, and a bold statement seeking a better, egalitarian, and compassionate world.
