FINN LOXBO

«Lummernikt»
FÖNSTRET, 17

Finn Loxbo is a Swedish experimental guitarist with a focus on free and structured improvisation. His music is usually on either side of two dynamic extremes: quiet acoustic or very loud. He is known for his own bands, Kommun and Kyosaku, and for his work with his partner Anna Högberg Attack.

His second solo acoustic guitar album, Lummernikt, follows the quiet side, and it was released eight years after his debut solo acoustic guitar album, Eter (Gikt, 2018). The album was recorded at Elektronmusikstudion EMS in Stockholm in June and December 2025.

Lummernikt is titled after a very strange Swedish now-protected family of vascular plants. Lummer grows slowly, and its reproductive spores can take up to twenty years to develop. These spores, known as Nikt in Swedish, were once ground into an extremely flammable, light yellow, volatile and explosive «old woman’s gunpowder», which was used for early theatrical pyrotechnics. Lummernikt requires careful handling, and Loxbo mentions that, «fittingly enough, there is a type of lummer called Finnlummer».

The eight free improvised pieces borrow some of the Lummer’s risk-taking spirit, often inspired in their tonality and rhythmic conception by West African, Indian, and Nordic folk music. Loxbo refers to these improvisations as «different kinds of terrain with varying vegetation and gradients through which the music winds its way, sometimes flowing, sometimes stumbling, or often tumbling down».

The album faithfully captures Loxbo’s free spirit, a guitarist with an imaginative sonic vision of his own, who knows how to let his spontaneous music flow and take him to unpredictable territories and suggest evocative and dramatic musical stories, all associated with a rich spectrum of non-musical inspirations. Loxbo keeps the experimental, uncompromising, and exploratory edge, but avoids volatile eruptions. His commanding fingerpicking corresponds with the timbres of the concert harp or the West African kora, visits minimalism and country blues, masterfully orchestrates overtones and subtle feedback sounds into elusive drones, and often sounds as if he is playing on an abstract string instrument.

Lummernikt demands attentive listening, but guarantees a rare, insightful, and deeply immersive listening experience.
