in.cantations documents the duo album of American, Colorado-based experimental guitarist Janet Feder, known for her pioneering prepared guitar techniques (who recorded with Fred Frith), and experimental flutist, sound artist, composer, and a certified Deep Listening facilitator Jane Rigler (who recorded with Agustí Fernández and is an Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Music at the University of Colorado ). Rigler hosted Feder in her album Rarefactions (Neuma, 2015).
The album was recorded in the summer of 2024 in Colorado Springs. It features nine live, in-the-studio, analog, free improvised pieces, with Feder alternating between baritone, acoustic, and vintage Kay guitar, and using ocean drum and small objects, while Rigler alternates between flute and bass flute and also using objects, with minimal usage of effects and multitracking.
Feder and Rigler’s intimate, introspective, and deep-listening dynamics highlight every nuance and subtle gesture, allowing the listeners to feel as if they were in the studio when they made the music. Feder and Rigler evoke mysterious, dream-like sonic images, hidden landscapes, and ancient languages that extend the guitars and the flutes’ sonic palettes into imaginary, timeless, and deeply meditative rituals, as if Feder and Rigler were possessed with otherworldly, consciousness-expanding powers to offer positions and spells. The painful, mourning «in.violate», is dedicated to the memory of Iranian-born vocalist and educator Haleh Abghari, who was the head of the voice program at the University of Colorado.
