Incoming documents a free improvised meeting of American, Boston-based guitarist Jeff Platz with the Cologne-based Colombian tenor sax player Pacho Dávila, and Portuguese drummer Vasco Furtado. Platz played before with Dávila, but this is their first recording. Dávila and Furtado recorded together before as a trio with prolific Portuguese double bass player Gonçalo Almeida (Illusions And Lamentations, Phonogram Unit, 2024), and as a duo (Paralelos, Self-Released, 2024).
Platz mentions that Incoming was conceived after «some quick conversation and a much-needed coffee», adding that this ad-hoc trio did not discuss anything about the musical approach. Platz assumed, after listening to Illusions and Lamentations, that it would be intense and focused. The album was recorded in a two-hour session with no break, until all three musicians felt «a bit exhausted», in May 2025 in Cologne
The outcome offers five «Extreme Measures», as one of the five pieces is titled. This trio opts for an intense, urgent, and uncompromising dynamics that keep pushing tirelessly and relentlessly to the most extreme sonic territories. Occasionally, Dávila would introduce a playful, melodic thread, often as brief introductions, but the muscular playing of Platz and Furtado would immediately transform these gestures into a fiery, dissonant storm. You may wonder why Platz, Dávila, and Furtado were just «a bit exhausted» after such a wild recording session.
