JÉRÉMIE TERNOY TRIO

«Survol à basse altitude»
CIRCUM DISC, microcidi048

Survol à basse altitude (Low-Altitude Flight) is the third album of the French Jérémie Ternoy Trio – pianist-composer Ternoy, double bass player Nicolas Mahieux, and drummer Charles Duytschaever. This trio formed in the early 2000s, and this album, recorded in May 2025 (thirteen years after the trio’s sophomore album, Bill, Circum Disc, 2012), reflects their deep, telepathic, and non-hierarchical dynamics.

The album offers six original pieces by Ternoy. All pieces highlight his refined melodic thinking, the organic way these melodies gravitate into seductive grooves, the strong individual voices of Ternoy, Mahieux, and Duytschaever, their deep camaraderie forged within this trio and parallel projects, and the trio’s clear, balanced collective interplay.

The title piece, a beautiful and lyrical ballad that patiently gains more power and volume, best captures this trio’s qualities. This low-flight piece suggests an open, attentive, detailed, and respectful dialogue that seeks shared, free yet vulnerable language rather than dominance. It focuses on what resonates between the notes, on those shared breaths where one senses the presence of others, the fragility of the moment, and the trace of life itself. And it demonstrates the trio’s wise, openly emotional, and mature dynamics.
