Keenroh, the Belgian Ghent-based experimental duo of flutist Jan Daelman and pianist, synth player, and percussionist Thijs Troch, search for a sonic environment where their sound-oriented, organically developed improvisations can develop instantly into spontaneous yet fully realized compositions, referencing the mathematical nature of jazz as well as the more radical free jazz.
Keenroh XS offers a much-delayed, counterpoint musical response to the duo’s expanded, nine-musician, adventurous Keenroh XL (El Negocito Records, 2015), and other musical adventures with drummer-percussionist Paul Lytton and electronics player Seppe Gebruers, in an intimate duo format of Daelman and Troch. It is a collection of ten short pieces, the longest lasting 02’13’’.
Keenroh XS’ flute and (the often prepared) piano mayhem is a series of enigmatic and subversive musical riddles that revisit the entire history of the flute and piano format. Daelman and Troch employ extended breathing and percussive techniques, and, obviously, their free-associative imagination, to articulate unconventional and unpredictable ideas, but they look for the next idea as soon as they conclude their radical essence. Sometimes, only a few succinct ideas and just an EP are needed to suggest a new, brave musical world.
