Nubes documents the first-ever and so far the last free improvised performance of the ad hoc trio of Finnish drummer Olavi Louhivuori (of now-defunct band Oddarrang, Superposition, and Linda Fredriksson’s Juniper), Norwegian trumpeter Eivind Lønning (of Streifenjunko and Christian Wallumrød Ensemble), and guitarist Kim Myhr (a frequent collaborator of Lønning), recorded live at Ääniwalli during We Jazz Festival in Helsinki in December 2021.
These experienced and resourceful improvisers and composers immediately found a common language and organic dynamics. The five pieces are titled after cloud formations, corresponding with the natural flow of the music and the unassuming way it takes off and gains collective intensity.
Lønning and Myhr push this trio into more experimental, enigmatic, and vulnerable territories, always searching to expand their sonic palettes with extended techniques and effects. Louhivuori thoughtfully ornaments their atmospheric flights with fragmented percussive sounds. Patiently, the tension solidifies and intensifies on the 16-minute «Arcus», where the trio becomes an inseparable, dense sonic entity. The following two pieces, «Fractus» and «Nimbus», mark the poetic, risky, and hesitant descent from the atmospheric horizons to unfamiliar, insatiable new sonic territories.
