Mauritz Agnas is a Swedish, Stockholm-based jazz bassist who comes from a musical family. He is the son of guitarist Sabina Agnas and trumpeter Urban Agnas, and his brothers are drummer Konrad Agnas, guitarist Kasper Agnas, and pianist Max Agnas, who play in the quartet Agnas Bros.
Flowers Were His Bones, is a collection of eight short pieces penned by Mauritz Agnas and recorded in Dalarna in 2025. Agnas sings and plays on the cello, viola da gamba, percussion, piano, keyboards, and guitar, in addition to the double bass and electric bass. He is accompanied by bass clarinettist Nils Berg and drummer-brother Konard Agnas. The beautiful cover artwork is by Italian dancer Viola Esmeralda Grappiolo (of Göteborgs Operans Danskompani).
This 24-minute album sketches a rich, timeless, and mysterious musical universe that constantly shifts between the thoughtful and orchestral, the tense and the unsettling post-rock, and the gentle and dreamy, folk-like songs and looser textures. but rarely touches the jazz universe of Agnas’ previous projects. The whole, short album is meant to be listened to from the beginning to the end without interruption, as it packs all the musical rivers that continue to shape and flow through Agnas’ inclusive and eclectic sonic vision.
