Francisco «Pacho» Dávila is a Colombian, Cologne-based tenor sax player, and is considered a central figure in the Colombian jazz scene. He composes and improvises in a way that incorporates a free language, edgy rhythmic patterns, and melodic elements of Colombian folklore.
Doing That is Dávila’s free improvising trio album with German trombonist Paul Hubweber, and Portuguese, Cologne-based drummer Vasco Furtado, who has been collaborating with Dávila in recent years. There is no information about when and where the album was recorded, but the seven pieces capture this powerful trio in top form: intense, energetic, and fierce, bursting with a stream of ideas, and enjoying stimulating tension and inventive rhythmic drive.
Often, Dávila introduces each piece with a commanding but sometimes unorthodox tenor sax sound and a melodic vein, but after that, it is an open game. Hubweber contrasts Dávila’s melodic stream of thought with a talkative trombone sound and uses his wordless voice as a Dadaist instrument, while Furtado anchors the commotion with free drumming and exploratory sonic gestures. Dávila, Hubweber, and Furtado have established an immediate affinity; together, they sketch unpredictable, quite eccentric, and labyrinthian textures that rely on sharp instincts, risk-taking, and the infectious joy of exploring and shaping sound into instant compositions.
