PETER KNIGHT

«For a Moment the Sky Knew My Name»
ROOM40, RM4263

For a Moment the Sky Knew My Name is the solo album of Australian, Melbourne-based trumpeter-electronics player-composer-producer Peter Knight, the former artistic director of the Australian Art Orchestra, and known from local bands Hand to Earth and TL;DR. The album was conceived in the summer of 2024-25, as Knight was camping with his family on Krowathunkooloong land in the south-east corner of the country. The place where he grew up and the same beach where he spent every summer throughout his childhood. This place challenged Knight with questions about belonging, about the relationship of the body to the wind. Of memory, of history, and of forgetting.

Knight composed four meditative, spacious yet layered soundscapes, and enjoyed the support of Room40’s label head, Lawrence English, who contributed atmosphere, produced, mixed, and mastered the album. Knight describes the music as «inspired by the water and the wind. By the tattoo of the insects’ beating wings and the soughing of the wattle in the sea breeze. By the dull roll of the surf and the rhythm of my breath against the pad of my feet as I walk along the sandy, leaf-littered path through the scrub to the beach. The fingers of the fire-blackened dead banksias clawing the vicious blue».

These evocative, cinematic soundscapes, especially the dramatic, lyrical 19-minute title piece, reflect Knight’s thoughtful attempt to resonate and immerse his music with nature’s present and past surroundings and ever-shifting formations and sounds. It may be Knight’s modest way of respecting the Aboriginal traditional songlines that connect sacred sites, hold stories, and survival information. And Knight concludes: «Sound braces us in the now but simultaneously connects us to the past – a porous membrane between inner and outer worlds».
