Burnt Pages brings together, remotely, Slovenian, Maribor-based guitarist Samo Šalamon (aka Dr. Jazz), on acoustic guitar (and designed the cover artwork and released the album on his label), with American, New York-based guitarist and educator Kevin Miller, on electric guitar, and tenor and soprano sax player Dan Blake (who recorded before with Miller, At First Light, Creative Sources, 2024). The album was recorded between December 2024 and July 2025, marking the first time these gifted improvisers had recorded as a trio.
Despite the geographical distance, this album sounds like a relaxed and intimate conversation that developed organically between old friends, each one with a distinct, strong-minded voice. It sounds as if this trio has instantly established its own aesthetic of thoughtful, soulful, and collective interplay, often relying on complex, almost-mathematical textures, knowing that the sum of exploratory approaches is larger than its parts.
Šalamon and Miller composed each of four pieces, and all are rooted in the jazz background of these guitarists, but are not bound by any genre or style conventions. The long process of recording this album allows this ad-hoc trio to explore more evocative, often lyrical territories.
