Improvisasjon av 13. januar 2023 is the third album of the Norwegian, Trondheim-based young. experimental TEIP Trio – guitarist Arne Bredesen (of the local earth moon transit), clarinetist Jens-Jonas Francis Roberts, and baritone guitarist Nicolas Leirtrø (of I Like to Sleep, Amalie Dahl’s Dafnie, and earth moon transit) – in a series of live albums exploring different spaces and rooms. The first album in that series documented the trio’s first-ever performance, and the second documented a four-day free improvising session with guitarist Maria Norseth Garli.
Improvisasjon av 13. januar 2023 documents TEIP Trio opening performance of the 2023 edition of All Ears Festival for Improvised Music with experimental cellist-composer Lene Grenager (of the SPUNK quartet and the Lemur ensemble), held at the Munch Museum in Oslo in January 2023.
The album captures the unedited recording of this free improvised performance. The unconventional chamber format, featuring two heavily processed electric guitars and two acoustic instruments playing free music, allows this ad-hoc quartet to patiently explore shifting aspects of dissonance, harmony, timbre, and tension building and release. The five improvisations are intense yet contemplative, often ethereal, and feature deep listening textures that express great respect for Grenager’s singular voice and seminal influence. All maintain the edgy, experimental spirit of TEIP Trio.
