TRONDHEIM JAZZ ORCHESTRA & MARIANNA SANGITA ANGELETAKI RØE

«Spíti/Home»
PLURITONE, PLU009

Marianna Sangita Angeletaki Røe is a Norwegian-Greek, Trondheim-based vocalist, composer, and percussionist, known from the bands Broen and Gurls. Spíti – Σπίτι, Home in Greek – finds a musical home between worlds, a deeply personal musical journey between the island of Mykonos and Trondheim, with visits in Kautokeino, Crete, Sevilla, and Catalunya, and between languages, memories, cultures, and heritages. Sangita has collaborated before with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra (TJO), on Oui, Gurls’ 2022 album with TJO.

Spiti/Home consists of fourteen songs collected from live recordings from Oslo World, Tromsø World, Skien World, and Molde Mundo in November 2024. It expands Sangita’s duo ON with soulmate and mentor, Spanish multi-instrumentalist Efrén López Sanz, with whom she recorded the duo album TMI (2020), who produced, mixed, and mastered the album. The album is based on her commissioned work for TJO by the same name, which premiered at Molde Jazz in 2022. The album was released by the newly founded Pluritone label of cellist-bassist Joel Ring and tuba player Heida Karine Johannesdottir Mobeck, who play on this album.

Spiti/Home is Sangita’s most ambitious album. She composed the songs with López and with Sámi vocalist Risten Anine Gaup, with lyrics alternating between Norwegian, Greek, English, and Sámi, and leads the 14-piece version of TJO. The double album suggests that Sangita’s home—the most inclusive musical and real home—matches the warmth of the sun-filled Mediterranean island and the openness of the Nordic fjord city, two places that do not necessarily go together. It is a refreshing, highly relevant message in a world torn apart by immigration crises and many, too many rootless people (and Sangita ends the album with a beautiful song dedicated to these people).

Sangita’s musical vision believes that differences feed and benefit strength. Spiti/Home proves that her musical and most humane instincts are sharp and can erase cultural and geographical borders and unite musical genres most naturally. The album offers a deeply emotional, joyful, rhythmic, and life-affirming celebration of sounds, languages, cultures, and friendships. «Home that can be carried within you no matter where you are», Sangita concludes. «A place where sound and language are fluid and ever evolving. And a place where everyone and everything is welcome».
