Zack Moir is a Scottish, Edinburgh-based tenor sax and electronics player, a multimedia artist, educator, and academic (he is Professor of Learning and Teaching in Music at Edinburgh Napier University). Roberto Cassani is an Italian-born double bassist, improviser, researcher and educator based in Scotland, whose work explores improvised music as a practice of joy, freedom and collective resistance.
Anaglyph documents the first recorded collaboration between Moir (who also did the cover artwork) and Cassani, recorded in Scotland in December 2025 and February 2026. The album’s title refers to the photographic process in which two distinct images combine to create the illusion of depth. Likewise, the album explores the meeting of Moir and Cassani’s individual musical voices as they converge into intimate, story-like textures.
Cassani composed the opening piece, «Adorable She Is, But Oh I Wish She Would Settle Down», and the closing one, «As She Dreams Her Afternoon in Shy Anticipation». Both pieces suggest patient, emphatic, contemplative, and highly melodic acoustic conversations with Moir, open for intuitive improvisations in which structure and discovery remain in constant negotiation.
Moir composed the two other pieces, «This Feels Less Like I’m Pretending» and «Rugged Countenance (Never Far From the Edge)». Moir adds a subtle layer of live, reactive generative electronic systems and sends the music into more abstract and spacious, ambient territories, still grounded by Cassani’s thoughtful and commanding double bass lines. These pieces are still rooted in improvisation, and «Rugged Countenance» highlights the experimental spirit of such deep listening practice.
