Dog’s Light documents the free improvising meeting of Polish experimental drummer-musicologist Adam Gołębiewski (who has collaborated and recorded with Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore, Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson among many others) with Australian, Melbourne-based experimental guitarist Dave Brown. The album was recorded in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2022.
Both Gołębiewski and Brown, on baritone and tenor guitars, are fearless sonic sneakers who use their instruments to sculpt and shape loose yet dramatic, cinematic soundscapes with extended techniques. The album features eight improvisations aimed at uncharted sonic territories and highlights a shared affinity for minimalist, raw, and suggestive gestures and unpredictable courses that flirt with seminal American no-wave music and European reductionist and free improvised music. These pieces never settle on familiar narratives or patterns.
Gołębiewski and Brown capture best the spirit of this adventurous meeting in their poetic words. «Here, mud made a rhapsody of distortion and sand. Dunes, where raised magnets at the dusk hour, receive textures and hints of country melodies, melodies mostly generated by limbs». These left-of-center melodies make Gołębiewski and Brown’s limbs dance in intriguing moves and disorienting pulses.
