Night as Day Day as Night brings together three musicians from Trondheim and Oslo’s experimental scene – guitarist Christian Winther (of Monkey Plot, Listen to Girl, and Ich Bin N!ntendo), pianist-synth player Anja Lauvdal (Winther’s partner, of Moskus, and collaborations with Jenny Hval, and the American elite rhythm section of William Parker and Hamid Drake), and sax and electronics player and sound engineer Espen Reinertsen (of Streifenjunko and Christian Wallumrød Ensemble).
These gifted musicians share rich musical histories, are tireless collaborators, and, as Winther defines it, «are very interested in music that lingers in the in-between state of things». Reinertsen and Winther recorded the trio’s debut album at the countryside studio Flerbruket in August 2020.
The 26-minute Night as Day Day as Night captures that elusive, dreamy, and quite abstract essence of «in between». It sketches patient and atmospheric soundscapes that sound like impossible folk songs mixed with lyrical ambient music, occasional bird songs, and some noisy beats. The individual voices are mixed into an organic, rich entity that refuses to surrender to any familiar form or narrative, and flows at «the pace of a cloud on a windless morning».
