GABBY FLUKE-MOGUL & LILY FINNEGAN

«Throw It In The Sink»
SONIC TRANSMISSION, STRCD31

American, Chicagoan drummer-composer-improviser-organizer Lily Glick Finnegan is known for Ken Vandermark’s Edition Redux and her punk band Cucuy, but she also collaborates with Nicole Mitchell, Fay Victor, James Brandon Lewis, Dave Rempis and Christof Kurzmann and curates the Experimental Sound Studio Option Series and Catalytic Sound Festival. Fellow American, New York-baed violinist-vocalist-improviser-composer-educator-organizer-doula gabby fluke-mogul weaves her music within the threads of free improvised music and free jazz and has collaborated with Ava Mendoza, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, William Parker, and Pauline Oliveros.

Throw It In The Sink is the debut album of the ever-experimental, creative Finnegan and fluke-mogul, a series of improvised songs, solos and laughter in this music, recorded at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago in the depths of July 2023. The cover artwork is by Ralph Rivera who designed many covers for underground bands.

Finnegan and fluke-mogul pay their respects to the queer punk rock and avant-jazz musicians of the expansive continuum of past, present, and future. They offer urgent, hyperactive and in-your-face, expressive and rhythmic songs that do not conform to any genre or convention, following Finnegan’s and fluke-mogul’s perspectives about a musical world without policing and in favor of amplifying marginalized voices in the world. Each song suggests a different attitude and a distinct experience of these resourceful, strong-minded women. fluke-mogul often employs her amplified violin as a kind of primitive, distorted guitar while Finnegan intensifies her singing and playing with her boundless energy and imaginative percussive colors. The album includes a tribute to the late singer-songwriter Dora Magrath («On the Fringe», and it begins with the intense, emotional «Fragmented Memory» and ends with «Memory Fragmented», both relating to a first, happy and empowering sexual experience.
