German, Berlin-based trombonist Matthias Müller and guitarist Andreas Willers have been collaborating in various projects in the Berlin free improvisation and jazz scene. The self-titled debut album of the duo was recorded at Willers Loft in Kleinmachnow in September 2023. Müller took the suggestive cover photo.
The album offers the elaborate and always inventive, free improvisation aesthetics of Müller and Willers. Patiently and thoughtfully they construct instant yet nuanced textures, relying on their deep affinity, deep l; listening, idiosyncratic languages and an array of extended techniques. The free associative music flows organically in its own accord and inner logic and encourages risk-taking gestures that twist and transform the common vocabularies of the trombone and the effects-laden electric guitar.
The 14-minute «as sik dat höört» (as you heard) may capture best the immediate and intuitive, fast-shifting and free associative conversational dynamics of this virtuoso duo and its inexhaustible bag of tricks. Müller and Willers are not shy from exploring uncharted, abstract ethereal winds and noisy, feedback-tinged sonic terrains throughout their fearless study of the unorthodox timbral spectrum of such a duo.
