NARTcore is the Hungarian, Budapest-based duo of trumpet player Ádám Meggyes and electronics and sax player Gergő Kováts. Not much is known about the two, except that Meggyes was classically-trained, later studied jazz, plays in the local pop band Irie Mafia and that he is an active performer of free music. Add to that that the duo interplay is fueled by constructive hate, an emotional intelligence that drive both to some explosive terrains.
NARTcore debut album offers challenging forms of urgent, effects-laden electric soundscapes. Two pieces, «gwrw» and «dablen», demonstrate one strategy of the duo. These pieces shift between manipulations of Meggves blows, transformed into a spiraling sonic entity that morphs as if it has a life of its own, muscular sax and trumpet duets and electric storms of noises and bleeps. The other three pieces, «mir», «nhablen» and «miroedd», suggest a totally different approach. These pieces are sparse and economic, sketching fragile cosmic trips, structured from fragments of blowing sounds and subtle, abstract electronics.
