ORQUESTA INORGÁNICA

«Viaje hacia lo inesperado»
NUMERAL, NU# 0032

Argentinian, Buenos Aires-based Orquesta Inorgánica (OI) began working in 2018 and features 13 musicians from different backgrounds under the leadership of alto and tenor sax player-composer Jorge Torrecillas. Viaje hacia lo inesperado (Journey into the unexpected) is the second album of this ensemble, following Noctámbulos (Numeral, 2022), and it was recorded at studio Haciendo Discos in Tandil, Argentina, in July 2024.

The new album offers Torrecillas’s modern and free jazz compositions and arrangements that enjoy the expanded brass and horn section of OI alongside uplifting and dramatic collective free improvisation and individual improvisations. Compositions like «Caminos Cruzados» (Crossed Paths) and «El dolor lo justifica todo» (Pain justifies everything) or «Veinticinco no tiene mitad» (Twenty-five is not half) suggest this kind of playful dynamics augmented with vocalists Karina Altamiranda and Juanita Flores Arce who use their wordless voices as instruments.

But OI shines when it experiments outside its jazz-tinged comfort zone, and imagines its own radical journey into the unexpected. «No Hay Razón Para Temer» (There is no reason to fear) follows its promise and cleverly and imaginatively flirts with atonalism and contemporary music. The surreal, often dream-like «Sueños Peligrosos» (Dangerous Dreams) is based on a ritualist reading of unconventional lyrics. The aptly-titled «No me pidas que decida» (Don’t ask me to decide) is a free improvised piece that gravitates into an instant yet quite chaotic composition.
