Pairs of Three is the debut album of Norwegian drummer hero Paal Nilssen-Love’s new band – Circus, a band that makes great fun music. Circus may be considered as an off-shoot project of the established Large Unit flagship, as it hosts Large Unit trumpeter Thomas Johansson, bassist Christian Meaas Svendsen and accordionist Kalle Moberg, but it is much more than a side project. More as an enjoyable addition to the ever-expanding world of Large Unit.
With Circus, Nilssen-Love fully immerses himself in his love for the music of Brazil, following his work with Brazilian musicians in the New Brazilian Funk (PNL. 2019). But the Circus septet offers a completely different atmosphere, still high-octane but more sensual and seductive. It owes much to the refreshing spirit and inimitable character of South African vocalist Juliana Venter, whose energy and intense focus evokes that of legendary Brazilian samba singer Elza Soares. Add to her two young and articulate musicians – Danish alto sax player Signe Emmeluth and guitarist Oddrun Lilja, and you already know that Circus is a new and promising beast.
Pairs of Three offers a wild and highly engaging ride within the world of Brazilian music, from Mestre André’s samba school drums and the north-eastern baião by Luiz Gonzaga, to Jackson do Pandeiro and Hermeto Paschoal, with links to the melodies of Edu Lobo and Milton Nascimento, via the horns and drums of the Maracatu sambada. All filtered through the powerful drumming and leadership of Nilssen-Love, that, still, few others can compete with his intense levels of energy. This band also demonstrates beautifully Nilssen-Love’s fascinating work with gongs.
Nilssen-Love founded Circus in 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdowns and Pairs of Three was recorded at Studio Paradiso, Oslo in the summer of 2021 after many performances of Circus. Nilssen-Love acknowledges the influences and the origins of Brazilian music but does not feel bound by them and suggests his own free, kaleidoscopic pastiche take on these ideas. It works magnificently due to the idiosyncratic and often quite eccentric personalities of the musicians of Circus. Nilssen-Love and Meaas Svendsen keep feeding the driving pulses; Johansson, Emmeluth. Moberg and Lilja color these irresistible rhythmic patterns with imaginative, gripping solos and healthy doses of musical humor, and Venter takes all to another level with her totally spontaneous songs of consciousness, charms, seduces and sings in English, Portuguese and German. You can hear echoes of Ethiopian and African music as well as the whole history of jazz, and Circus rocks hard and wild but can play poetically and mysteriously as in the touching last piece «hummingbird». Somehow this chaotic, mysterious and raw energy of Circus operates perfectly, and most of the time you may feel tempted to get up and dance and enjoy the uplifting spirit of Circus’ music.

Trommeslageren Paal Nilssen-Love er en av våre mest produktive trommeslagere. Opp gjennom årene har han gjort et utall plateinnspillinger med alt fra solo, duoer, trioer og helt opp i enorme versjoner av sitt Large Unit-band.
Nå har han funnet sin plass med med septetten Circus, hvor han har innlemmet sirkusartistene Juliana Venter (vokal), Thomas Johansson (trumpet), Signe Emmeluth (altsaksofon), Kalle Moberg (accordion), Oddrun Lilja (gitar) og Christian Meaas Svendsen (bass), mens sirkusdirektøren selv trakterer trommer, perkusjon, gonger og cymbaler.
Og fra starten , med «Nazere da Mata», som er to låter koblet sammen og skrevet av Mestre Bi og Mestre Carlos Antônio. Og umiddelbart er vi et godt stykke inn i en eller annen jungel, hvor de sju musikerne virkelig kaster seg hemningsløst ut i det eksotiske og drivende. Det fortsetter med «Bota Fogo», hvor Nilssen-Loves heftige trommespill ligger som grunnlag for Johansson, Emmeluth og Lilja. Og musikken er utrolig tøff. Det svinger grasalt, og Nilssen-Love og hans medmusikanter viser at arven fra det brasilianske og afrikanske er mer enn fult mulig å kombinere.
Dette er «party»-musikk av høy klasse. Hør bare på Liljas gitarsolo som er som «snytt ut av nesa» på Carlos Santana.
Og slik fortsetter det. Vi kenner de fleste musikerne fra både Nilssen-Loves andre prosjekter, plass andre av våre favorittband. Den eneste nye for oss, er vokalisten Juliana Venter, som passer perfekt inn i dette prosjektet, hvor hun både gir oss afrikansk og sør-Amerikanske tekster, pluss at hun også trekker inn en strofe fra Lennon/McCartneys «Strawberry Fields Forever». Og hele veien er dette en strålende fest som det bare er å gi seg over av. Alle musikerne er helt framme på tuppa for å tilfredsstille sirkusdirektørens direksjoner, samtidig som de får store åpninger for individuelle krumspring og C-momenter.
Alle solistene blomstrer gjennom hele albumet, ingen nevnt, ingen glemt, og dette er en samling musikere som er noen av de mest kreative man klarer å oppdrive i «furet værbitt». Og Nilssen-Loves trommespill er ut av denne verden! Du snakker om «duracell-kanin» av beste merke! Fulladet og klar til dyst! Tøffere enn dette blir det ikke!
En relativt fri, energisk og ytterst medrivende plate, som jeg gleder meg hemningsløst til å få muligheten til å høre på konsert. En innertier fra Nilssen-Loves sirkusartisteri!
