WE FLOAT

«Let Go»
HAVTORN, HR074

Let Go, the third album of the Norwegian-Swedish, Malmö-based quartet We Float, was recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic and its dire implications on our lives. But it still radiates an innocent and optimistic spirit of solemnity and consolation, or a kind of «emotional support» atmosphere as We Float defines it. Maybe, this is the reason for its innocent and optimistic spirit of solemnity and consolation, or a kind of «emotional support» atmosphere as We Float defines it.

We Float has established its own unique aesthetics – jazz songs with a strong pop sensibility, but ornamented with clever prog-rock and fusion tricks, Not surprising if you remember that We Float was named after a PJ Harvey song (originally from Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, Island, 2000). Let Go solidifies further this potent blend with ten new songs. All the music and the lyrics were penned by bassist-bandleader Anne Marte Eggen. She is joined by vocalist Linda Bergström,  keyboardist Fanny Gunnarsson and drummer Filip Bensefelt. guitarist extraordinaire Samuel Hällkvist is still considered a guest but his playing adds a sharp avant-twang touch to We Float’s sound.

Let Go offers nuanced and melodic mini-dramas that float naturally between vintage, atmospheric layers of prog-rock keyboards and a King Crimson-esque electric guitar, and are driven by the gentle, funky pulse of Eggen and Bensefelt. The angelic vocals of Bergström and her unassuming delivery cement the emotional, intimate essence of the songs. These elegant and carefully-arranged songs refer briefly to the seminal work of Kate Bush, Simple Minds, Tears For Fears and Peter Gabriel, but all sound fresh, engaging, and, yes, quite caressing and comforting. Let Go simply draws you into its own joyful and beautiful world, and its immediate emotional impact allows you to forget for a while about our troubling times.
