Norwegian, Bergen-based vocal artist-composer Bodil Lunde Rørtveit is known for her expressive, genre-defying voice and innovative musical concepts. She explores the human-nature connection and transforms each project into a communal, immersive experience that resonates with audiences. She has worked with percussionist and ice instrumentalist Terje Isungset and the vocal folk octet Apes&Babes.
Djupna (the depth) is Rørtveit’s debut solo album, comprised of only Rørtveit’s naked, versatile voice – layered and multitracked – as a singular, most intimate instrument. It was inspired by the wild beauty of Sotra, an island off the western coast of Norway, and suggests a contemplative, sensual journey through its forests, the deep sea, and starry skies, offering a moment of calm in a fast-paced world. She calls the album «a meditation in the face of chaos, a protest against mindless efficiency, and a response to the turbulence of our times».
Rørtveit offers seven wordless, meditative, and timeless vocal pieces in which she weaves fragile harmonic structures, gentle drones, open tonalities, nature-inspired bird calls and whale songs, fleeting melodies, and minimalistic yet deeply emotional mantras. Rørtveit creates an evocative and vivid sonic haven that can accommodate hers – or the listeners’ – quest for reflection and inner peace, or a search for one’s truest self through the natural world.
