Acamar is the Slovenian trio of sax player Cene Resnik, featuring a rhythm section of double bass player Matjaž Bajc and drummer Urban Kušar, both playing together in another local group, Kombo B. The debut album of this trio was recorded in April 2017 at the Gallery TIR, located in a renovated former industrial building on the outskirts of Nova Gorica, Western Slovenia.
The Acamar Trio quotes John Coltrane on the cover: «I think music is an instrument. It can create the initial thought patterns that can change the thinking of people». The spiritual fire of Coltrane inspires the free, urgent and open interplay of Acamar Trio. Resnik has a full, warm and naturally charismatic sound on the tenor sax, with many fragile and lyrical veins, while the rhythm section of Bajc and Kušar stresses its driving power.
The intuitive, slow-burning and free-improvised interplay is highlighted in the second piece «Azha» gravitated only by the muscular drumming of Kušar. «Keid» begins as an abstract, adventurous piece where all are searching for new sounds and sonorities, but soon shifts into a fiery and dense free jazz piece. Acamar concludes with the meditative «Cursa» the employs wisely the resonant, large space of the Gallery TIR. The brief, wild and playful «Rigel» serves as an encore.
Many inspiring thought patterns. Let’s hope that these patterns may change the thinking of some people.
