BRUTTER

«Montreuil Beats»
BRUTTER, BRUTTER001

The Norwegian Brutter duo – brothers keyboards player Christian Wallumrød, known as the leader of his own ensemble, alongside his work with Dans Les Arbres, and drummer-vocalist Fredrik Wallumrød, known for his work in various rock and metal bands, in addition to his work with another gifted sibling of the Wallumrød family, sister, singer-songwriter Susanna, releasee a third, live album, captured at Les Instants Chavires, Montreuil, France, in October 2018 via their newly-founded Bandcamp page.

Brutter focuses on machines, electronics, and human-driven beat music. Christian plays the drum machines, synthesizer, and electronics, and Fredrik plays the drums, drum synthesizer, and electronics. The three parts of the performance offer a bold conception of pulse and time. The rhythmic patterns are abstracted into sparse, fragmented patterns that methodically and slowly accumulate into rigid, cerebral
structures. Patiently, Brutter enriches these structures with new elements, letting these elements establish their arrhythmias in the alien-sounding sonic scenery.

Towards the end of the first part, the course of this performance becomes clear though quite surprising. The second part affirms that Brutter is heading for a bumpy bleak dance floor for high-brow, clumsy dancers, as the rhythmic patterns land on solid, straight land. The last and third part intensifies these rhythmic signals but keeps insists on experimenting with sudden, fractured pulses dispersed in a large
space. Slowly, these slow-motion, techno-beats converge into a tangible, dance-like reality, but then Brutter already concluded the performance.
