«Inner Lift» offers an inspired meeting of two kindred spirits – experimental vocal artists, Norwegian Sissel Vera Pettersen, the artistic director of Trondheim Voice, and Danish Randi Pontoppidan, in her fourth release for the American Chant label in the last two years. Pettersen and Pontoppidan first met in a workshop in Denmark in 2004 and have been close friends and collaborators since then, touring and sharing experiences in life and music on the road. They have previously released three albums in three different trio constellations – with Hans Sydow, «LIFT vs Sydow» (Gateway, 2007), Thomas Agergaard, «Convocation» (Gateway, 2012) and Jakob Davidsen, «Silence Trio 2» (Ilk Music, 2018).
«Inner Lift» is Pettersen and Pontoppidan’s first duo project on record. The album was recorded live over one day at the Village Studio near Copenhagen. Their voices are augmented by subtle electronic treatments, Pettersen’s Tibetan singing bowls and Pontoppidan’s prepared zither, but their rich and imaginative vocals are, obviously, at the center. The nine pieces were free-improvised from scratch, with minimum preparation and with no overdubs, and no pre-made loops or effects.
«Inner Lift» succeeds to suggest a definite atmosphere, one that imposes its presence on the listener in the most natural and calm manner possible, allowing the listener to take a necessary break from the surrounding daily commotion. The ethereal voices, the folky sound of the zither and the meditative overtones of the singing bowls accumulate into a series of mysterious and untimely choral chants and incantations. The electronic real-time treatments add enigmatic, delicate layers.
The album opens with the ceremonial «Come», a piece that is simple and complex at the same time, melodic but also totally intuitive and free, letting the listener’s subconscious be in a constant play. Vera Pettersen and Pontoppidan sound as having emphatic conversations with each other, all take their own twists and turns and all stress the profound and organic connection and communication between these gifted artists. The meditative «Mazuu» and «Ohro» sound like purifying mantras. The 12-minute «Raindrops’» is the most complex piece here, layered with repetitive vocal patterns and electronics. It takes Pettersen and Pontoppidan on an evocative, atmospheric mission, bringing a peaceful message from planet Earth. «Swimmingly» is an innocent, dreamy piece, sung with Pontoppidan’s prepared zither. This most beautiful album is concluded with an arresting farewell piece, «Stay Safe», another enigmatic incarnation that lifts the listener away from the outside, unsettling reality.

De to vokalistene, danske Randi Pontoppidan og norske Sissel Vera Pettersen, har kjent hverandre i mange år. De har (nesten) vært naboer i København over flere år, og etter at Pettersen flyttet hjem til Norge og Trondheim, har de jevnlig hatt musikalske møter, ikke minst på eksperimentelle skolekonsertturneer i Norge.
På deres første duoprosjekt på plate, får vi ni improviserte melodier hvor begge synger, samtidig som de spiller på diverse elektroniske hjelpemidler, pluss en preparert zither og såkalt «singing bowl».
For den som kjenner til Pontoppidans relativt eksperimentelle vokalkunst, vil nok denne innspillingen være en overraskelse. For allerede i åpningslåten, «Come», føler jeg at de beveger seg nærmere folkemusikken, enn det vi har vært vant til å høre tidligere. Og det er en ro over fremførelsen som fascinerer. Det fortsetter i «Etheral», men her nærmer de seg mer det vi er vant til å høre fra Pontoppidan, selv om det også her er det melodiske som dominerer.
I tredjesporet, «Mazuu», blir det nesten som musikk man kan høre i en kirke, med en høytidsstemning som hører hjemme i et kirkerom, og hvor jeg antar at det er Pettersen som har hovedrollen.
Og slik fortsetter det gjennom alle de ni låtene. Hele veien er det roen som oppstår når to gode venninner setter seg ned og har en god samtale, men det er aldri snakk om noen baksnakking og onde hensikter. Her er det hyggelige samtaler hele veien. Og jeg føler at de to har hatt en fin stund i Thomas Vang sitt The Village Studio i Vanløse.
Disse «samtalene» er rett og slett blitt en samling improvisert musikk som gjennomgående er varierte og vakre, selv om mesteparten har et litt melankolsk lydbilde. Og elektronikken er kun med for å fremheve de to nydelige stemmene som passer perfekt til hverandre. Og hele veien gjennom er dette musikk man kan senke skuldrene med og nyte.
